With the current prices in natural gas, I would go with a wood fire. Besides you get a better aroma and it is a lot cheaper. So you have to make a little effort clearing out the ash? A little work never hurt anybody.

Gas or you could set up solar panel heating. The government will give you something towards doing this as it is eco-friendly.
