Ever since I started watching anime/ reading manga I've always noticed that more girls than boys are into the Japanese animation thing. In my whole class there are 3 people that like manga/anime (including me). They're all girls. I find that odd because I always thought that guys were like the childish, read anime/watch cartoons type (not that anime and manga are childish). But the more I think about it there a lot more girls that I know that read manga and/or watch anime versus the number of boys. Is it like the same situation for you? Why do you think its that way?

Overall, I think it might actually be females, but I’m really not sure…
Let’s see… *thinking about everything…*
The book market is dominated by females and so more females are reading manga than males (I’ve read a few research pages on this).
(Don’t really know why this is since the Western comic market is dominated by males…)
Reading the manga usually leads to watching the anime. Girls are therefore consuming BOTH mediums (anime and manga).
Also, it seems that more shoujo manga is being printed than any other; females have more options. AND THEN, be sure to take in the fact that females are more diverse in what they will read/watch. Girls will read shoujo/shounen/horror and violence and whatever else is out there (yes, even hentai).
Males are more likely to head towards the action and horror and hentai- though, this is BY NO MEANS the rule. Many won’t read shoujo (at least not where their friends/family can see *laughs*) and I’m pretty sure 99.9% won’t read that REALLY, REALLY fluffy/cutesy shoujo (you know what I’m talking about! *laughs*).
Boys have less options and they obviously can't consume what simply isn't there.
But reading is still reading and most males figure ‘why read when I can watch the anime?’
Therefore, THEY are consuming MOSTLY ONE medium.
In conclusion, I’d say girls are the leading market for anime/manga. :D

That is a difficult question. For every girl who loves anime for all the pretty men, there is probably a boy out there who loves anime for the equally pretty girls and the fanservice. I think girls have a majority in this area cause girls are easier to latch onto something that they really love, whereas it could take ages for a boy to go from casual to hardcore otaku. I can say that my clique of anime friends has about four boys in it compared to about twelve girls. But I can also say that I know at least seven boys who watch anime on a regular basis without being true anime fans. In conclusion, anime is only dominates by girls, because boys are too stupid and ADD to get addicted to it like us.

There are actually more shoujo mangas and anime with "pretty" characters comparing to the shounen action and fighting. I'd say that's the major evidence to say there are more girls reading mangas than boys.

Since there is such a thing as Manga porn I'm going to have to go with boys. If Manga porn didn't exist I'd have to go with girls because of all the fruity and fluffy crap anime there is in the world like Sailor Moon

no, boys like it too. At my school, people are CRAZY for naruto. and i mean crazy.Suregirlslike it, but boys do too. But there are more manga thatcaptures a girl's heart rather than a guys. more shojos than shonens too.
