Each state has their own laws on the legality of swapping engines. Usually, you cannot install a motor that is older than the car it is going into, due to the need to maintain emissions compliance. As far as the feasibility of what motor can be put into what chassis, the only limits are budget and imagination.

A crate engine, is usually a Chevrolet small block 350. It can be installed in most GM applications that used the GM small block V8. Other than that the choices are limited at best. I have heard of crate engines being installed in early Fords, but they need to fabricate mounts and trans adapters to do it.

The only limitations would be size of the car and money. With vehicles you can do pretty much anything as long as you can afford it. The imagination is the limit of what you can do. If you can think of it it can be done either with your skill or anothers.
