Somebody did that just to screw with us. Back when they typewriter was popular, sources also claim that the QWERTY layout (the one you see now) was designed to slow down typing speed to further reduce jamming.

The original layout was based on a printer's box, a tray that holds type for typesetters. The most used letters are grouped near the center and less used letters were near the edges. But they had problems that if people typed too fast the little mechanical arms that struck the paper would get caught on each other. So they moved the letter around to separate the arms with the most popular letters so there would be fewer collisions. the results is the qwerty keyboard used today.

Oh! What an interesting question! Seriously, I hope someone who knows will answer this. I've always wondered who picked the order that the keys are in & why. In other countries only a few keys are in different places, but I don't think any country has the alphabet in order, from left to right.

The alphabetical Dvorak keyboard was initially employed for typing, but people soon found out that a different specific variation of key placement was more conducive with typing. You can still find Dvorak keyboards for modern computers if you wanted to buy one.

When they first made typewriters the keys were in order but they typists could type so fast it would make the keys stick, so they scrambled them up some to slow it down and the keyboard has stayed the same.

They put them in the most convenient order. Based on which keys are used the most. So it's more likely to be easier and faster to type at any one time.

The letters most used are in easy to reach places. Seldom used letters, such as Q, Z, X, are in akward places. Still...there are some curious placement of letters. This is all asuming you use the traditional finger placement.

It makes it much much easier to type, if they were in the order given in the alphabet, you would probably have one hand doing most of the work.
