I work at a fast food place and today I was told by my new shift manager that I had to go out and clean and wipe tables down in the dining room. I didnt like going out there because it makes me feel awkward when the customers are staring and looking at you while they're stuffing their faces and you're like the only employee in the dining room, by yourself. Does this make any females feel uncomfortable?

I felt so embarrassed that I lied to my other shift manager and told her I was sick and wanted to go home.

As a patron of fast food, i do not feel it is odd. We are happy to see that employees are trying to keep the place clean. Also as a former worker at a bagel shop, it was not uncommon at all and when people looked I think it was more to see what I was doing (because we had to refill the coffee machine and stuff).

Customers should be able to come in and sit at a clean table. There is this one lady who comes into clean the tables at the McDonald's in town, and she just glares and stares at people while they eat. Now that is annoying. Then yesterday two teen age rs were told to go up into the slides and tunnels in the play place and clean. All of a sudden little kids were crying and screaming. These two teen age boys were up there spraying the cleaner in the face of little kids and not letting them down the slides. A parent went and got the manager. And the manager had to crawl up there and get these teen age boys down. Parents were furious and left. You are getting paid to do a job, so do it and stop your complaining. If you do not like it, go get a job at wal mart.

Do your job and do it thoroughly. People are relieved to see that someone is actually cleaning up the place so roaches won't have a field day. You may get some looks from some old geezers, but I'm sure you get that even if you aren't wiping tables.

As a person who was eaten in a fst food place, I have noticed the workers cleaning the dining area and such and have never given it another thought. It is part of your job. People appreciate you cleaning up the tables so they can enjoy their meal. You would get harsh looks if you did not keep it clean.

I'm a waitress and believe me, I have those days where I just feel totally awkward. So I can relate. It feels like pepople are just staring at you all ady---which they are. I guess you just gotta deal. Hey, you're looking at them too---at least you are not the one with food all over your face!!! Don't stress yourself out over it---just zone out and do what you gotta do. BUt, I would recommend waitressing over fast food for your sake though. The money is way better. AND it will help you become more comfortable with yourself around people. Don't get me wrong though, it still sucks. I've been waitressing for 6 years.......I'll be the first one to tell you that I need to reevaluate my life and what I want to do with it!! I didn't even graduate from H.S. so don't feel bad.

I hate being watched when I am working anyway and especially going to the dining room while people are eating.

No I did it all the time when I worked in the restaurant business. I'm very friendly and would often talk to people when I was doing it.
Sounds like a confidence issue.

It's a job. Someone has to do it. It' might not be the best job but at least you have one. Think of it as an incentive to go to college and study hard for a good career.
