What does the nickname title "The Kid" mean?

Well, for example, "Billy The Kid"....notorius outlaw, however he began his life of crime at a young age (14 or 15?).....I don't think it's meant to describe a baby goat, but I suppose it depends on the person's actions. I guess it's easier than saying "That Young Person". LOL. Good question.
