I spend a lot of time and effort shreading and my mail trash etc to make sure that my identity is not stolen. Then I get a cold call from a "loan broker" or possibly telemarketer posing as a "loan broker" or maybe even an "identity thief " posing as a loan broker and I give them everything they need to become me. How am I supposed to validate that they are ligit and aren't going to rip me off?

You are not sure ever . Do not ask them for a phone number but look up the bank on the net and then call info and get the number. We hear of alot of scams out there everyday and this is a new twist on an old scam . Banks do not solicit over the phone !!!

Much info they may have about you is public record if its regarding Real Estate, and everybodys name in the country is on a sales list of some sort; If you use a safeway club card, fly a certain airline alot or just apllied to win a hotub in a shopping mall drawing your info is somewhere on some list (posibly many lists).

If you where telemarketed the telmarketers are required to identify themselves by name and thier company within the first 30 seconds of the call, and thier companys phone number cannot be blocked so if you have a cell or caller ID it can be captured.

The 2 ways to see if they are legit is 1.)did they follow the rules of telemarketing and .2) could you verify their comany and their offer through a third party? (they have to offer you a call back number if asked).

Telemarketing is a perfectly legit (although annoying) business.
That being so stated NEVER EVER EVER give out private info over the phone and NEVER especially EVER over the web or E-mail.
Many incidence of ID Theft are traced to authentic looking websights for mortgage companies. You just never know who is on the other end.

Always go with local reputable companies when seeking any financial advice.

Don't get a loan from someone who calls on the phone. If you are in need of a loan, seek out a reputable company to obtain one. Never give your personal information to someone over the phone or Internet. Go see the loan officer in person. There are lots of crooked loan brokers out there. Check out the company before you give any information to them. If you don't need a loan why bother talking to them?? Just politely say "no thanks" and hang up.

First of all, do you need loans? If not, why are you talking to those people? Just tell them thank you for calling and don't call again.
