I just read in the news http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060809/ap_on_re_us/oil_field_alaska that the Alaskan governer has instituted a hiring freeze. What exactly does that entail?

So to clarify, is this a mass freeze of all government jobs in Alaska, and if someone leaves their position or are fired, will they be replaced?

It means that they will not hire anyone else until the freeze is over. The goverment of Alaska that is. This does not mean they will not replace people as needed such as if a state trooper retires. They can still replace the trooper. It does mean however, that the goverment cannot enlarge their workforce in Alaska. This most likely was brought on because of the problems with the pipeline.

Hey that guy above me stole my answer. That's not fair.

It usually means that there will be no people hired for any positions and if a position is vacated during the "hiring freeze" it will remain empty until the freeze is lifted. In this case the Alaska state government will not be hiring any employees until the hiring freeze is lifted.

A hiring freeze basically is a company's way of saying that they are not hiring... Nobody comes into the company until further notice. My company i work for is currently under one.

It just means that they won't be hiring any new employees. They will stop hiring until circumstances change.

No hiring for right now, until they 'unfreeze' hiring, then things can go back to normal, hiring wise.

when you freeze something, you cool it down.... so imagine it as hiring being cooled down to the point of being stopped... that is why they use freeze in that context.
