My period smells a bit fishy. I've read on the net that a fishy smelling DISCHARGE means you should go see a gyno. Ususally my period smells a bit like iron, but now it smells fishy, i'm not sure if this is normal or if i should go see a gyno. I'm also afraid of how to ask my mom, she doesn't really believe in going to the gyno and she's going to yell at me saying that i didn't keep clean.

It's normal to a degree to have a kind of foul odor when you have your period, especially if you use pads. It sounds like you need to use cleansing cloths, or just wash more often. It's not just you, but all women need to stay especially clean during their periods, because when blood hits the air and sits there too long, it takes on that smell you described. Maybe you are bleeding a lot, and should try a tampon with a pantyliner. That might help. And yes, tampons are perfectly okay to use at your age. Make sure to change pads or tampons often(every 3-4 hrs) when you have a heavy flow. And listen to other people on this page. It's always good to see a gynocologist at least once a year.

Are you sexually active? If you are you would noticed that fishy smell after sex becuase the bacteria in your vagina mixed with semen aggravates the condition and gives you the fishy smell. There is a condition called Bacterial Vaginosis, which in term means that your "good bacteria" in you vagina has been altered in not a good way. You would need to see a gyno for this and be treated with an antibiotic called flagyl or metronizadole, or a gel/creme called MetroGel. Both work amazingly. But if you not active, then for sure a gyno needs to check you out.

maybe there is a change in your body chemistry that is causing it. it doesn't sound like something to freak out about. i think that in this case, menstrual blood is different than the discharge you read about. usually that discharge is associated with an infection (and you will KNOW when you've had that sort of discharge-- the consistency is different.) your best bet is to bathe the area twice a day. if keeping the area clean (as possible) doesn't work, or if the smell continues after your period, then worry about the doctor. and BTW, even though your mother doesn't believe in the gyno, it's good that you do.

Well, a smelly discharge is different than your period. I would wait until you've finished this period. If you still notice the smell after your period is over, then go see your gynecologist.

ok woa I just threw up, sorry but that just sounded so gross. & for the first person a gyno is a gynecologist, which if you still dont know what that means, please slap yourself. yeah so back to your question, this is sometimes a sign of chlamydia, but if you're a virgin you dont have to worry about that, if you've had sex you should deff go see a gyno. And you dont have to bring your mom, or even tell her, well if you have a job, if not you should prob save up some money first.

I know how you feel. If ypu have a detachable shower head wash down there really good. It helps. But I don't think you should go see a gyno. Try taking vitamins wit iron too.

Every girl should have their first OBGYN visit once they start menstruating. Your Mom is doing you a terrible disservice by not taking you to see the doctor.
Schedule your own appointment for a check up. If you don't know a good OBGYN, ask your friends for a recommendation.

it's gyn as in gynecologist. the iron smell is normal since it's blood and it has iron. any changes in smell, consistency or even color should be checked out coz it may be a sign of some underlying condition. ask your family physician. if he thinks it's worrisome, he'll refer you to a gyn.
