I'll start the answering off with the 2000 Baltimore Ravens for the simple fact that their offense sucked, yet they still ran through teams. Who ever heard of the defense scoring the points to win games.

The Steelers defenses of the 1970s are legendary, but the 1976 unit was the best (slightly better than the '75 squad). Here's why: 28. That's how many points the Steel Curtain surrendered in the last nine games of the season. That's a total. As a result, Pittsburgh, which started the season 1-4, made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game, which they lost to the Raiders 24-7. (It's worth noting that Pittsburgh running backs Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier were both injured in that contest.)

The '76 Steelers didn't have it easy -- their opponents had a .528 winning percentage. But they had these guys: Hall of Famers Mean Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Jack Ham and Mel Blount. And eight Steelers defensive players made the 1976 Pro Bowl team: cornerback J.T. Thomas, defensive end L.C. Greenwood, Greene, Ham, Lambert, defensive back Glen Edwards, safety Mike Wagner, and Blount.

85' Bears and 00' Ravens are probably the best ever. The Steelers of the 70's were dominant, but that was partially due to the fact that so many other teams were good on offense and crappy on defense. Not to take away from all those great Hall of Famers, but the Steeler offenses back then were putting games away relatively easy, therefore giving the defense free rein on feasting on the opposing offenses.

2000 Ravens. No question. They easily dominated the Super Bowl with virtually no offense. Many of its starters will end up in the HOF.

They set NFL records that year for fewest points and fewest rushing yards allowed in a 16 game season. They held all their opponents to fewer than 11 points a game that year, and allowed only 23 points during their 4 games in the playoffs.

They were the most dominating and powerful defense in NFL history, and I'm not sure we'll ever see another defense of that caliber again.

You make a good point with the Ravens, and they're right up there with the '85 Bears and the great Steeler D of the 1970's. From what I've seen, I'll concur with the answer that was given for the 76 Steelers, though. That was the best season of their incredible run...and, how about all those great Hall of Fame players from that squad?!

Mean Joe Greene, Ham, Lambert, Blount, etc...also Greenwood, White, Russell, Schell....

Aaron V is right. The Steel Curtain defense of the Steelers in '76 was the most dominant defense ever in the NFL. To site all fo the reasons is to just be redundant over what Aaron has already said.

The Philadelphia Eagles gang green defense! Their offense was worse than the Ravens and they may have still won if it wasnt for those dominating Dallas, San Fran, and Giant teams of the 90's!

i can see whey you like the Ravens D, but i think they are #2 behind the 85 bears. why?

the bears had the most feared defense off all time. nobody wanted to play against them. and who can blame them? in detroit they knocked there first sting QB out, and one of this back teeth. if you were a QB against them, god help you. they didnt want to beat you, they wanted to KILL you. no they had the speed to get to the QB, the size to stop the run, and the brilliant 46 D lead by coach Buddy Ryan. IMO they also had the best front 7 to ever play the game. there d-line was incredable, but there linebackers, Singletary, Mashall, and Wilson were each big fast crazy mofo's. there secondary wasnt the best ever, but it did not have any holes in it. and gary the hitman fencick was on of the best saftys to ever play the game. they are the best D of all time, hands down.

Any team can be tough for a few seasons, but the Steelers have been bone breakers since the 40's. Their teams of the 70's caused the rule books to be changed. The league couldn't find any other way to slow them down.
