A device that forwards data packets along networks. A router is connected to at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP’s network. Routers are located at gateways, the places where two or more networks connect.
Routers use headers and forwarding tables to determine the best path for forwarding the packets, and they use protocols such as ICMP to communicate with each other and configure the best route between any two hosts.
Routers can be used to program and filter the packets to and fro.
PS: All answers, especially KV's points to Internet sharing. Its one of the application of the routers. the basic defenition is what I stated above. Its not necessary that routers are used inInternet sharing only.
A router acts as a junction between two or more networks to transfer data packets among them

Hi, Routers help other people recieve a wireless connection to another computer, Basically if the computer you want to recieve the internet on has a wireless adaptor, either built in or via usb or a card, then you need a router of connected to the main computer, so you need to make sure that you register both computers to the router so it will recognise to send the wireless signal to the one without internet. Also the router on the main computer has to be switched before the computer can recieve the signal to connect to the internet. I will tell you on your computer wheather it is connected or not. The router we have is a BTvoyager, it was really complicated as we had to type in codes and stuff but it now works. I would speak to a person at the store before you buy your router and wireless adaptor as it depends on what speed your internet connection is etc. Hope this helps

A basic router allows for (usually) up to 4 different desktop computers to be connected at the same time. One port is for the modem line. The computers connect to the router via CAT5 cables. Also, the router works in setting up a network of computers. If you have a wireless router, you can get your laptop connected through the wireless router via the 802.11 a, g built in wireless card. To increase your range, you could also plug in an Wireless Adaptor via your USB port.

I could list the ways Routers work but the easiest and best way for you to learn this is to go to this web site:
http://howstuffworks.com
This site has a plethora of information on all types of things and outlines them in easy to follow format. I go there all the time to learn new stuff and I am a technical junkie. I highly reccommend this site to learn different things.
Good luck and have fun learning about Routers and other computer related items. Once you go to this site you will find it facinating and difficult to leave. One area leads to another and then another and so on. It is a lot of fun!

A router allows multiple computers to access the internet or each other in a Local Area Network. Means you can share a broadband internet connection, a printer hooked up to another PC or files and documents on another PC. Once you have installed the software supplied with it, each connection should auto-detect.

depends on the router, most routers plug into ur telephone socket and allow u to have multiply computers online at the same time, some come with wireless capability and this means if u have another computer in the house also with wireless capabilities it means u can use that computer anywhere in the house and stil acess the internet.
Hope this helps!!!

A ROUTER is used to share an internet signal with other computers.
If you just want to create a network with no internet, then use a HUB, it's cheaper.
A ROUTER also has a built-in HUB.

to keep it simple if you have a internet connection set up in one room and want to share it you could use a router for this. if you have 3 pc's in your house and you want them to link together a router can do that as well.
