it has 110,000 on it and ive had no other major problems. the tranny fluid has never been changed,so i will do that, but i would have assumed it would have began slipping or gradually built up to the problem, and not just happen all of a sudden.

If you have your forward gears, your linkage inside and outside the transmission are OK. If you have no reverse and have all forward gears, then you are looking at a failure of the reverse input clutch or the low/reverse clutch. Don't bt fooled, the low/reverse clutch is only used in reverse and manual low. The only difference you would notice in manual low if the L/R clutch was gone is you would not have engine braking in manual low.
It is possible there is a mechanical failure somewhere. The result is the same. You have a "replace or rebuild/major repair" problem requiring transmission removal.

Please do not waste your money on any snake oil remedies or exterior repairs. It is not the wiring or the PCM or even the valve body in any way. It is clutch or internal breakage.

Sorry

If you lost 2nd and 4th besides reverse, the sun gear inside the trans is stripped. Either way, the problem is most likely inside the trans and will need removal and disassembly to repair.

There isn't anything external that would cause the loss of reverse if all other gear selections, including park are working OK.

The gears or clutches in the transmission have worn down to nothing or have been stripped. Or you could have a valve body obstrruction. Either way you will probabally have to take it to a tranny shop. Unless you are skilled on working with transmissions this is one of those things best left to the professional.

bummer, try and change the fluid and filter but damn your gonna need a new one most likely. probably after you change the fluid you will see a problem with reverse and first. those two gears use the same drum for there respective operation

typical problem with them! The reaction shell inside the transmission stripped the splines. You'll have to have it overhauled. Sorry!

Most newer vehicles require trans fluid change every 25000miles/40000kms. Yes it can stop working that quick. Our neon trans went suddenly too.... big surprise being a neon!
