The reason Kurt was such a phenomenon had very little to do with his voice. His soul was as large as his generation. His passive-aggressive resistance to the choices our parents made is still as powerful today as it was back then.
We all felt trapt in coming of age, Kurt was going through the same thing every one of us was only on a grand scale. The only thing it had to do with music was what it was attached to.
There's nothing of that sort really going on right now in music, but when a true star rises to the top, it makes everything else pale in comparison. Who cares about if his voice is "good" or not. It has nothing to do with that.
Layne was pretty special too :(

An artist like K. Cobain only comes along once a generation or so.
I will always remember where I was & what I was doing when I first heard the opening chords for Smells Like Teen Spirit.
You obviously know nothing about music.

You got company here! Put him against Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Sammy Hagar, Rod Stewart (when he rocked), Paul McCartney, etc, etc etc... He pales. He can't sing. Hes terrible.
I'll save my comments on Alice In Chains singer. The question was not about him.
