As it seems a bit confused, it was Harry Chapin who wrote it and had a hit with it first, then it was later covered by Ugly Kid Joe.

Can I just add having read some subsequent answers - Cat Stevens is NOT Harry Chapin, and Cat Stevens very definitely never recorded 'Cats in the Cradle'. Also, I'm not aware of Guns n Roses doing a version of it either despite having searched a few reputable discographies. I'm interested in evidence to the contrary, but as far as I know it was written by Harry Chapin, based on a poem written by his wife.

Ah, unravelled the mystery. The version you are listening to is a illegal mp3 that has been labelled as GNR by someone and the thing has stuck, but it actually IS the UKJ version you have. The original was written and recorded by HC, the lyrics were based on a poem by his wife, and CS never recorded it or had anything to do with it - *that* myth started simply because of the word 'cat'.

Thanks for the question - i learnt something today!

Harry Chapin sang the original "Cat's in the Cradle." His wife wrote it for him.

It was covered by Johnny Cash, Cat Stevens, Ugly Kid Joe, Simon & Garfunkel, and a ton of others.

Harry Chapin, who also wrote it; I think someone else did a copy later.

His brother, Tom Chapin, used to host the kids show "Make a Wish" where he would sing and rhyme for 1/2 an hour.

It was by Harry Chapin and is called Cats in the Cradle. It's about a little boy wanting to spend more time with his dad but his dad's always busy and putting him off. Then the little boy grows up, the dad retires and wants to spend time with him but the son is now too busy and keeps putting him off.

Harry Chapin. Not to be confused with Cat Stevens...Cat's alive ( and a new album is rumoured to be on the way ) and sadly Harry isn't...he died in a car crash in LA ( I believe ) some years back. Check out his 'Dance band on the Titanic' LP for a treat!
