First of all if you are part of a LAN then it is free. As a member of a Local Area Network, one of two things is happening. First of all it is your own Network, of a member of your family in your own home. Second, it is at a small business where you are employed and the business does not have a Domain Server. Either way it will be free to connect to the Local Printer.

Now, if you are lacking in the skills in setting up the Printer Share just go into your "Network Connections" and select the Network you wish to Share the Printer on. Then right click and select "Properties". On the Properties Box are a couple of Tabs. Click on the General Tab. On this tab is the list of Protocals on your system. (You must be logged on as "Administrator" in order to do these configurations) On this list should be These following three Protocols: 1. Client for Microsoft Networks 2. File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and 3. Internet Protocot (TCP/IP) and if you are using XP Professional 4. Qos Packet Scheduler. (This last you don't need unless you have a specific advanced Network Requirment or your Router requires you use it. Usually this is not used except in very large businesses.

Now, make sure these are all there and all have checks in them. If the File and Printer Shring for Microsoft Networks does not have a check mark in its box, place one there to enable the protocol. If it is not in the list then you need to istall it. Click on "Install" and then follow the directions for installing this protocal on the screens which follow. It is not difficult at all.

Once you have this checked you need to go to the computer which is connected to the printer you wish to add access remotely on your network or share between your networked computers. (I am assumming you already have set up your network as you said you have a LAN). The computer which is connected to the Printer is called the Server. Go into the Control Panel, select Printers and Fax, select the printer you wish to share and then right click and select Properties.

On the sharing tab click the box "Share this Printer". Once this is done a hand with holding a rod type device will show up under the printer in the list of printers on that computer.

Now, go to the computer you wish to use the Printer on. Select any file for printing and click 'File' 'Print' and when the Print Box shows up the Printer should be listed in the box at the top of the Print Box. If not click on "Add Printer" put the name of the Printer in the "name" box and click Find. Make sure the Server is turned on as you can not access a resourse if the server which has that resorse is not turned on. Then the system will tell you to wait while it loads the drivers click Yes to confirm it is Ok to do so.

Now, the Printer should be listed, just click on it and use it. If it is the only printer for that computer right clickk the icon for the printer and select "set as default". Then in the future all Print jobs will automatically print with that printer.

Good luck setting up your Printer Share and have a nice day.
