Craig's List, a sign on your car saying For Sale, just because you're driving it around it'll get more exposure (but make sure your cars clean b/c then it will look more appealing to potential buyers)
Autotrader.com
There's a Wheels and Deals place in my hometown that is a giant lot of cars people are trying to sell. Its not exactly a traditional used car lot, there's no salesmen. Its just a giant lot of cars, and people put the price of the car, the ammentities with the car, the miles, damage etc. This way people can browse without the hastle of car salesmen hounding you.

Let everyone know that you are selling it. Many people like to buy cars from someone they know. Make sure it is priced right. Use edmunds.com or similar to find out what the Blue Book value is and then price it a bit lower. Clean the car. I am looking for a car right now and am surprised how many people are trying to sell a car with last week's McDonalds wrappers on the floor. Try craigslist.org

www.ebay.com, www.autotrader.com, are the two that I can think of that are good. If you live in the US and you live in a state that has an auto dealership called Car Max, then take it there. They will buy your car and you don't have to buy one from them. Before you do anything, make sure that you check out the value of the car and what your payoff is, if any, and do some research and see if there are tons of other people selling the same type (hatchback, SUV, sports, etc.) as you. That will make it more difficult to sell!

Put a for sale sign on it near your home or work include a phone # and asking price.

I did this (had the car outside my home) and within 2 weeks it was sold for what I asked for.

Example: '97 Toyota Corrola, 86,000 mile, $3000.00

Put a for sale sign in the window and drive around.
You can park it in the Home Depot, Walmart or Lowes parking lot and see if you get any takers.

Its cheap for you and visible to potential buyers.

best way to sell the car is to post ad in local magazine or newspaper. If you don't want to expend any money then you should seek clients through your friend/social circle.

I'd go to the dealership where you want to buy a new one and trade it. You'll only pay the difference of the new one minus what they gave you for the old one in either a down payment and/or monthly payments.
