Are there any other med that would cause a positive reading? This test was taken just to detect oxycontin and the person being test has not had oxycontin. My friend takes a morphine patch and that is what he thinks caused the positive reading.

Oxycontin is an extended release morphine. The morphine patch is another way to deliver morphine on an extended release schedule. Usually a drug test is not looking specifically for oxycontin but testing for general categories of opiates. Many medications fill this category. Eventually, the lab can retest the sample to determine as closely as possible what chemical components the drug has. Since the morphine patch is extended release morphine similar to the patch, this is probably the most similar chemical compound the lab could match it to.

The test that checks for narcotics catches all narcotics. So yes, the morphine patch would cause a test for oxycontin to be positive.

My advise is to call your local pharmacist! They will be able to tell you whether those two drugs are in the same classifications. However, I do know that it would show a positve reading. I don't know if it is considered to be in the same family as oxycontin. If the answer is yes, he can get a print out of his history from the pharmacy that he buys it through. Therefore he has a legal foot to stand on since it is not illegal to be on such types of medications when you have a script for it. Good luck!
