Why potassium iodide and rectified spirit is added when produce

In my chemistry book,it is written that 1/2 ounce potasium iodide,1/2 ounce iodine and 1/2 ounce rectified spirit when added it creates tincture iodine.

Tinture of iodine is simply iodine dissolved in alcohol. I don't understand your question.

The iodide is addded to better dissolve the iodine.
One can form I3- out of I2 and I- without a real redoxreaction. I3- has similar oxidative behaviour (and thus anticeptic properties) as I2.


You can neutralise it (and it's brown color) with sodium thiosulfate.
