at dinner- 10 unless you have a huge banquet hall. But per table, 10 is about max to carry on a meaningful conversation.
on the planet- 1 Billion. Actually less for happy, healthy civilizations, but we are overpopulated and are using our resources at an unsustainable rate. 1 billion people would still allow sustainability.
in an elevator- 4-10 depending on the size of the elevator and the size of the people. I like my personal space.
whatever- 27.5. Its a good number.

At dinner: If you live as a couple: three or more; if you are in a family dinner, it's never too many people!
On the planet: We are already too many people right now!
In an elevator: For me, two or more....I love my personal space too much!
Whatever: one more person in the wrong place at the wrong time is too many people in there!

A dinner for 2? 3 is too many.
More than the ecosytem can support is too many. (time for birth control world...)
More than 9 normal size people and just one more for a stinky person.
Whatever would come back to population control, doubling time, sustainabliity, etc.

The planet has way too many people on it right now. We need to reduce our numbers drastically, and for the next two hundred years limit the number of babies allowed to be born to one per couple.
