I recently inquired my local newspaper about if they accept freelance submissions, last week. I've heard back from yesterday. They do on a contractual business, assigned and paid for, and no unsolicited. What are the pros and cons of being a contractual stringer? Shall I do it? Anyone know in the field of journalism?

I have no experience in journalism, nor clips. But I did take a Journalism class in college on Newspaper Journalism Writing. I have an Associate's in Liberal Arts/Science.
