My French girlfriend thinks I am fond of the vino a tad too much but there is no way I am an alcoholic. I say the difference is in the the hang-over. One is enormous and one doesn't exist. Any thoughts?

Yes but what is the 'line'? I will happily get stonkered on a Friday and Saturday but die all day Sunday and don't want to see it until the next Friday. Am I a drunk and a moron like mrm72000?

Sutter-Cane: I think there is a world of difference between the two. One is a disease and one is a social problem. Your thinly-veiled revulsion of all people that drink is a bit hard to swallow (no pun intended) and borders on neurotic. Good luck with that. Cheers !!

An alcoholic is someone who is addicted to alcohol. The question is, do you have to drink until the craving is satisfied, or can you happily do without it? The quantity doesn't matter.

Wrong. There may not be too much of a difference between a big drinker and an alcoholic, but what makes a person an alcoholic is when they can't stop boozing. Sure, lots of heavy drinkers say they could take it or leave it, but those that can't leave it are addicted. Hangover has nothing to do with it, nor does your tolerance level. If you have an overwhelming compulsion to hit the sauce, you're an alcoholic.

Probably nothing.

Most alcoholics, sorry Big Drinkers, I know, other than those that are already dead through Liver Failure and Bowel Cancer were aware of the fact that they were big drinkers, but did not consider themselves to be Alcoholics...

If you like to drink, carry on, Liver Failure doesn't care doesn't care what you call yourself.

Liver Failure/Bowel Cancer are extremely horrible, and usually long & painful deaths; with blood pooring out of your eyes, doubled over in pain, legs filling up with urine, screaming in agony, projecticile vomiting, begging God not to let you die, whats not to like...

Next time you drink, don't toast to good health - no point...

Cheers!!!

a 'big drinker' as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary is 'someone who drinks to the point of delirium, argues over taxis, shouts in the street at 2am and eats kebabs even though they don't like them'

An alcoholic according to the OED is 'a dirty scotsman that lives in the bus station, says 'give me a ciggy' every 4 minutes, drinks just about anything flammable and stands in the road at 2pm in soiled trousers shouting 'ye bastards ye' at passing cars.'

so not much difference really....I'm a hardcore piss artist,so I don't do any of those things.Ye bas....oh dear...what a giveaway.

The difference is that if you stopped for say a week you would feel just fine. Alcoholics have a chemical and psychological dependency. Alcohol withdrawl is the only one that an actually kill you. Others like Heroin and nicotine won't kill you but you'll wish it did.
