This is my first colt and even tho I know I dont have to do this yet. I hear vets do it but horse people who know about this do it themselves and save a huge vets bill.

Ok, this is a wonderful topic. A "bean" is a collection of smegma inside the urethra of male horses. Some horses can accumulate a huge bean to the point where it interferes with urination. When you clean your horses sheath..at least annually, you should check for the bean. You can feel it from the outside of the actual penis, (not outside the sheath). Usually it takes a little maneuvering to get it out. You sort of squeeze and pinch and it should pop out. Really big beans may require the intervention of a vet. You can do this at home using a sheath cleaner like excaliber. I wait for a hot day so the water feels good. Sometimes I'll start with a Calm and Cool chaser, just to relax them. If they are not relaxed they will not let down the penis and you have to go up inside the sheath to clean. It is much easier if they have it hanging out.

I hope this helps. Wear gloves, the smegma and junk inside a sheath reeks.

I clean my geldings. I use the sheath cleaning gel.

When it is cold outside, I take warm wash cloth with warm water.

When it is hot outside, I use cold water which feels good to them. Less likely to be upset.

If my horse is at the vet and she feels he needs it. I usually will just let my vet. However, I normally will do it on my own. I don't see what the reason to pay extra when can do it myself.

Make sure you make sure all the gel is rinsed out of his sheath. Always stay on the side of him and not under his abdominal. Some horses kick or extremely irritated. Get to know the horse and be gentle.

My vet just charged $65.00 to geld my horse. That doesn't seem so high. Never heard of "beaning". You know the colt shouldn't be too young don't you. We like to wait until they are almost 2 years old so they get more growth.

You can clean it yourself. It is a very dirty and smelly job. You can get a bottle of sheath cleaner at tractor supply or somewhere that sells horse stuff and follow the directions. Good luck.
