I'm choreographing a dance production number for a competition dance team- the kids ages range from 5 yrs-16yrs. There are 12 kids total. I want it to be a jazz routine using upbeat, fun music. Any ideas for songs, themes, costumes, etc.... would be sooooo appreciated! Thanks!

That's quite an age range! and level range. Here are some ideas:

Take something from a musical
80's music is coming back in the competition scene
I just choreographed a big production piece to Cirque Du Soliel
The Pussycat Dolls has a cute song called "Right Now"
Nikka Costa has some funky stuff
Since you have such little ones, you should keep it light & fun!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Well, I always thought that a sort of "Through the Ages" production would be really cool. Basically, the dancers would represent different eras- including the fashions, hairstyles, etc. that goes along with that time period. For example, the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's and 1980's (or whatever time periods you wanted) could be represented with three dancers each. Each group would come up and dance to maybe a 60 second or so music clip of an upbeat, jazzy song from their time period.

For example, for the 1950's group the girls could wear poodle skirts while the guys sport the leather, greased back hair look. They could wear their hair in bobs, and dance to an upbeat song clip from Grease or something.

The 1960's group would wear tie-dyed costumes, and have long hair (using a hairpiece or something for those that have short hair) and could dance to a clip of any really catchy 60's song.

The 70's group would represent the disco era, and wear bright colored disco type costumes, and dance to something from the 70's.

Lastly, the 1980's group would represent that sort of spandex, big hair, teenage rock era. They would wear any costume representing that, and would dance to a rock song clip from that decade (maybe Blondie's Call Me?)

At the end, all the dancers could get on stage and dance together.

Some costume ideas:

1960's:

(or just ripped up jeans, tie-dyed shirts, and beads!)

1980's:

Sounds like a fun project!

Personally, if I wanted to win, I'd find out who the judges are and cater to their whims.

Not knowing that, I'd take a bet and reference Bob Fosse or Jerome Robbins -- some of the edgier jazz stuff they did will seem fun by today's standards and accessible to the judges. You just know the kids would love doing some Fosse!

And, I'd make sure I had a solid concept -- feature each kid but not be too obvious about it. Use the entire space - the proscenium arch, the aisles, the wings.

Two fun ideas, real quick. If they have velour wings, choregraph an opening with the kids batting at the material, this will create dust in the air and make the shafts of light stand out (same if you have a black backdrop).
Second idea, if you have a cyclorama in the back, have the stage hands 'wave' the cyc the final ten seconds of the piece.

"Cheap and Dramatic" that's my motto!

Merde!

You could possibly do a chronological montage of well-known songs from films/musicals. Selections from Guys and Dolls - West Side Story - Sweet Charity - Cabaret - Cats and Chicago would work well for jazz/contemporary dance.

Ok im not sure if you heard of it but the musical Hairspray. It is probly the most up beat musical in the world. For the little ones do the song Mama im a big girl now. and maybe the finale you can't stop the beat but you can choose. Costumes do very preppy 60s dresses. Also for costumes do lots of bright colors. Hope that helps!

What ever you do, do not put them in leotards I'm sick of seeing kids and other people dancing in leotards. It also depends on what kind of dance your doing, if you are doing a kind of funk dance then put them into some funky clothes like a skirt (not denim) and black leggings or a colour that matches the skirt and just some kind of a top that has a cool saying on it.

How 'bout that Cotton Eye Joe song? It's upbeat and fast and you can do a killer jazz routine to it.
