The British monarchy died many years ago. They now have a parliamentary style of government with a Prime Minister. The Queen and all her people are just figureheads who may be able to suggest an idea or two just because of their wealth and status, but they hold no real power.

I think it'll last until Elizabeth's death. King Charles III are the three little words that make everybody in Britain want to be a republican.
To yars232c, the EU would never force the end of the British monarchy because so many countries in the EU are monarchies too: Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. They're all I can think of, not sure if there are more.

I find it hard to imagine the Monarchy lasting long if Charles takes over. The reason why we had the heir and the backup heir from Di was so that, hopefully, when Elizabeth II passes, we'd have a sympathetic replacement. Charles will get no such sympathy from the public if he accedes to the throne.
I find it hard to imagine a British Republic, a UK without a Royal family, and yet it looks increasingly as if that's the way it's going. Royals, MPs, ministers, civil servants, CEOs, celebs ... there's a groundswell of distrust and malcontent among the grass roots public to anyone who holds themselves at a station above us, and that dissatisfaction at their perceived increasing irrelevancy could well continue to build, aimed particularly at the role of the Monarchy in daily British life.
For the moment, they're safe. But in two, three generations ... who can tell?

If Charles steps aside for William and Kate the Monarchy will go on and on. England should never be without a Monarchy.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be terrible if the EU forced all the monarchies out of society.
Did you guys really know and thought out what was going to happen to the UK once you joined the EU?
On youtube there's a new video about how the UK is now destroyed. I'll be watching it later tonight.

The Monarchy will probably end next time there is a major scandal, like if Prince Charles becomes King and gets filmed having extramarital sex

I don't think we'll ever not have a monarchy. I hope we always will have one. Its part of Britain.
I'm not a "Republican" - why would we be better off under a President? He'll live in a big **** off house and drive a big **** off car and send his kids to a big **** off expensive public school and cost just as much as the Monarch and as for "well he'll be elected" - heheh how many Americans take that as an excuse for Bush!!!?? Are Americans happy with Bush because "Well he was elected?"?"? Imagine President Blair! OMG I'm having heart failure! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Nah stick with the queen. Presidents are for crappy little boring countries. Like France.

What many people don't seem willing to understand is that through the immense earnings of the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall, the royal family actually subsidise the taxpayer and not the other way around.
Given the alternative to our current head of state is President Blair, I am most definitely not for change.

Hopefully forever in some capacity. Even if it has no power and only remains as a "social club", it is an important connection to the past. In many ways it links every modern Briton and many Americans back through history to the roots of what we are today.

For as long as they do a useful job for the 'Establishment' - in this country at least the monarch has been a figurehead that has helped to provide a sense of timelessness, continuity and hegemony for the ruling class.
