Welding the differential to make a posi probably isn't going to do you much good overall; you'll most likely lose your tires in the first few minutes anyway. One good tip is to make sure that if your vehicle has a fuel/ignition shut-off switch for collisions, the switch is deactivated. It is usually in the trunk somwehere. The late 80's and early 90's Ford big cars are famous for this and left a friend of mine in a derby helpless after his engine shut off in the first hit. After the derby, he reset the switch, started it up and drove out of the ring.

Welding the diff won't help much. It will make it impossible to steer, especially on a muddy field. As far as cages go, check the tech standards. Reinforcements are usually forbidden, though you're usually required to weld the doors shut and that goes a long way to stiffen the body.

The tricks are in your technique. Protect your radiator! And your front wheels! Ram others with your rear end only. Go for radiator hits or side impacts on the front wheels. Keep in mind that good demo derby racers will already be doing this and LOVE to take out newbies!

PLAY FAIR!

I get sooooo sick of people who try to cheat in derbys, or sandbag the whole time, etc. People are there to see a show and be entertained, not watch a bunch of strategy and B.S. Wanna win "croud favorite"? Find the car that's sandbagging (driving around and barely hitting) and hit him so hard you put him on his side. Even if you wreck your car, people will be talking about you for weeks, and probably buy you lots of drinks that night!

first off you should put a roll bar in it. For saftey and to stiffen the body. also you should reinforce the drivers door.
