Okay, lets take Yahoo as an example.
You've got three major things going on at Yahoo: a search engine, email and social networking stuff like Answers, Flickr, MyWeb etc...
The search engine generates a lot of income because the adverts displayed down the right hand side of any search results page generate revenue for Yahoo each and every time someone clicks on one.
Email comes in free or paid for varieties, obviously if someone wants a better email service they pay for it. The free email service comes at the price of seeing adverts - again, when they are clicked Yahoo makes money.
The social networking stuff can also display adverts and make revenue that way. Some services, like Answers for example, are what's known as 'loss leaders' - they don't provide any direct income (because it's a free service, and we don't see any adverts) and so they cost the company money, but they are useful because they reinforce brand awareness and provide additional ways of directing people to the services that do bring in money.
In this way, even the totally free services without adverts will indirectly make Yahoo money.
