hi i am a nurse i would advise your boyfriend to go to the doctor immediately, this could be a simple case of piles or something more serious

If his stools are normal, and the blood is bright red, then it is likely just hemmorhoids and he needs to take a stool softner. However, if the stools have changed color significantly, in addition to seeing blood...then he needs to see the doctor as soon as possible because this could indicate bleeding somewhere in the digestive tract, such as ulcers.

He should really get checked out by a doctor to make sure everything is okay. That's the only sure way to know.
