The easiest way to get rid of fruit flies is prevention. You should examine your kitchen carefully and make sure there aren't any remains of ripe or rotting fruits anywhere around. If any fruit is exposed (like a fruit plate) -- put it away and seal it securely. That's especially pertinent to ripe bananas, apples, and pears.
If you would still like something to attract fruit flies and trap them, use beer instead of vinegar. Pour beer into a wide-mouth jar, then cut a corner off a small plastic bag and put it over the jar, securing it to the edges of the jar with a rubberband. The fruitflies will be attracted to beer, and become trapped inside the jar.
An even safer liquid that would attract flies is strongly scented lemon soap (such as Ajax Dishwashing Liquid) -- just dilute a little bit in a deep plate of water and flies will get attracted to it and then drown (the soap will break apart the water surface tension, so the flies will drown the moment they touch the surface).

How to get rid of fruit flies in kitchen? First find the source and get rid of it then....
1 cup of water,
2 tbsp of sugar
2 tbsp of vinegar,
1tbsp of liquid dish soap.
Mixed it all in a jar any size or bowl small and placed a cloth or paper underneath so as not to spill on the table or floor and put it in a place away from anyone that could knock it down but close to were the fly’s are and your problem should be over. Works great! Vinegar alone doesn't work
Regarding the poster below me? Has this person ever heard of fruit flies. I am totally cracking up. Deet??????? LOL!

You can build a fly trap using a 20 oz soda bottle, a small cone of paper, and some bait (such as mushed up bananas or peaches).
Put the fruit into the bottle, and tape the cone of paper point down onto the mouth of the bottle. The cone should have a slightly larger than fly sized hole. Once the flies end up in the trap, you can pop it in the freezer and reuse it a couple of times, or throw it away.

Supposedly deet in low enough amounts is okay for kids over a month old. Deep Woods Off has a bottle specificly for kids. If you are talking about a housewide problem though, then you need to go to Home Depot or Lowes and ask about any number of products to make them go away. Do the spraying or bug bombing with everyone out of the house and wait for it all to dry before letting your kids back in.
