It's either the fan, which is constant, the CPU processing data or more likely the hard disk, which uses rotating platters (disks) to store data. Each platter has a smooth magnetic surface on which digital data is stored. These platters make a noise as they move. Any of the above.

The noise you can probably hear when its starting up or loading programs is the heads on the hard disk moving across the platters to access the data. This can sound like a rattling noise or popping noise, but it is out of keeping with the normal operational sound of the machine. Don't worry about it, its perfectly normal

If it's just a single beep, then it's just the computer checking itself before starting, known as POSTing (Power On Self Test). Other noises could be one of the internal fans turning over, but it shouldn't be that noisy. You also get the sound of the hard drive searching or the files it needs to start your computer - these can vary on different machines. It's difficult to give a definitive answer though without actually hearing it.

The hard disk is a series of thin metal plates, and against each of these is a metal arm - a bit like a arm/needle on a record player. Its the noise of the arms moving across the disks - the noise should not be anything to worry about unless it actually sounds like it's scraping..

there are various reasons for noises from your hard drive, there can be a scraping noise which isnt too bad ,it normally makes a scrapping noise after around 3 years, its just the arm running over the hard disc platter, were all the data is held,as a hard drive revovles at up to 7200rpm,and this can cause friction which in turn will produce some ambient noise
you also can get a clicking sound, this is not good,it normally means your drive is on its way out,if you hear this, back up your data asap and replace your hard drive
any other noise such as whining, scraping, whiring,is normally just wear and tear of a drive, only clicking needs immediate attention
good luck

If you mean when the hard disc is spinning then it's the magnetic pick-up on the surface of the disc plus the motor used to spin the disc.
If you can here the hard drive spinning it must be an old one, most of them are silenced these days.

It is the lazer moving back and forth examining the disc and storing the information through the motherboard...
My hard drive was once always making noises.
Until i found out it was buggered.
I had to take it out, put a new one in then put M Xp back on it. very costly. ; (
