Yes, religion is one way to control people. Make them fear and then tell them particular things they must not do. Government and religion are the two main ways to control people.

I'd say thats a very good question!
Yes, religion is a way of controlling people! Religion is personal, and most people are deeply sensitive to religion...their religion.
Give communal turn to any event, and get anything done from people...anything at all..even if its murders or mass killings.
As for democracy, it wasnt supposed to control people, instead people were supposed to control it. How? By choosing their government. Last elections in India proved that people can control democracy, in terms of choosing their representatives. A major chunk of Indian population is rural, and they were unhappy with the last government's policies as none of them benefitted their lot. Government lost the election!
So, democracy can be used to control government too, but the citizens should vote the right person, and each one of us must vote...

Religion has long been used to control the way a society works, but only because so many people believe in it. I am religious, but it's still obvious to me when I see leaders of a religion calling people to war, and having people answer their calls that religion is a controlling method.

Of course it is. People have been controlled by religion from day one. The people that are higher up in the religions use fear to controll their people. They tell them they are bound for an eternity in HELL if they don't do what they are told.

YES!!!! There is an excellent saying: Religeon doesn't ruin people, people ruin religeon.
As long as humans run religeon, someone will use it for his own gains.
Like Jeffrey Rush's character told Daniel Craigs character in 'Elizabeth': What is God to you? Has he abandoned you? Is He such a worldly God that He must play at politics and conspiracy?

True religion is a way of controlling ourselves so that we remain in appropriate relationship with our Creator and His creation.
