British Honduras was the former name of a British colony on the east coast of Central America just to the south-east of Mexico, now the independent nation of Belize. Settled by Europeans since the 17th century, it was a crown colony from 1862 through 1964, when it became self-governing. Belize became fully independent from the United Kingdom in 1981.

You may have mis-heard. I'm not sure that it was called anything before that but it is now the independent nation of Belize.

I'll look some more to see if I can find a better answer.

I can also tell you that it was originally part of the Spanish claim.
