They "cut" a diamond by striking it along a fault. They polish it using diamond dust on wheel.

The diamond cutting business has grown technology wise tremendously in the last several years. The old method was to use hand tools, and hit the raw diamonds along weak points, or fault lines. The cutter would have to visualize the cuts in his head, or draw them out on paper to see what it will kind of look like when finished. This was a slow, very methodical way of doing it, everyone did it this way. Then, with the advent of lasers, the cutters started using them instead of chisels, and mallets. But they still had to visualize the cuts by hand. Then with the advent of computer controlled lasers, the computer was able to "look" at the raw diamond, and figure out exactly the largest single diamond you could get from the raw one, and maximaze profits. They simply set the diamond on a pedestal, and the computer and laser do the rest. It is quite a facinating sight.

Diamonds are polished by using other diamonds. They are cut along faultlines and then polished. I think we are talking about the same thing, I never heard of a dimond.
