Come to NYC, we are desperate for teachers here. The starting salary is $41,000. In fact the Dept. of Ed. will even give you a $5,000 housing allowance.

There will be a HUGE demand for both elementary and secondary teacher in the next ten years.

First, it is NOT impossible to get a teaching job in Southern CA now or is it likely to be in the near future. LAUSD is always crying for teachers and has many working on emergency credentials. As the push is on to decrease class sizes and build new schools the demand for qualified teachers is expected to far outstrip supply in the next ten years. If you only want to work in a beautiful, well funded, suburban school, it may be tougher, but there is still room for more qualified, dedicated teachers. If that is how you see yourself, employment opportunity should not be a problem.

Teachers have been needed for a hundred years and will be needed a hundred years from now. Are schools going to stop existing?

As for getting a job in a certain location, you should consider the possibility of relocating to growing areas. Places like Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Tennessee, Florida, etc are growing very quickly. As people move in, more schools are needed. As more schools are needed, more teachers are needed.

Besides, Nevada, Texas, Florida and Tennessee don't have state income taxes, so you can actually afford to be a teacher. And growing areas usually have lower costs of living. That's why they're growing.

You're correct... I've been teaching for over 20 years and unless you're willing to relocate it will be difficult in southern CA. You can stack the deck in your favor though by majoring in Special Education or Mathematics... both areas of strong demand. Check out the Federal Bureau of Labor and Statistics and you'll see exactly what I mean.

Go east, then. It is easier in this part of the country. Do you think you will love to teach? If you don't, try something else.
