I always have heard this expression...but I never did understand how far it really was..

Hmm... well I when I was in high school I ran Track and did an event called the 'Triple Jump' Where you sprint a short distance and then make 3 consecutive jumps.
A Hop - Jump off with your right foot and land on your right foot
A skip - Jump off with your right foot and land with your left foot
And a Jump - Jump off with your left foot and land with both feet in the sand.
I dont know if that's where the expression originated from, but if so - my best was about 38 feet.

very close. Imagine kids playing hop skotch in the yard or drawing on the sidewalk. That is a hop skip and a jump.

Well,when i Hop...
It is to another city by airplane,so as to see a lady...
So it could be any number of miles...
When i Skip...
It is the last step prior to getting on that plane from the ramp...
So it's like two feet...
And when i Jump...
It is for joy when my eyes meet the lady's,whom i am hopping and skipping to be in her company...
And that could be anywhere from one foot to several feet...
