Some games require the analog feed back for buttons (The PS2 supports that the harder you press the button, different things can happen) Like Madden or NBA Live, and won't work with a PSX controller, even a Dual Shock Controller. Many games however only read digital signals (The button is pressed or it isn't) and will work with a PSX Dual Shock controller. And few games will even work with an original PSX controller (No joysticks)

Oh, and the PS3 has not yet been released... o.O

Well it can fit into it, but it will not work. I have tried it before and nothing will happen. The PS2 is only backwards compatible with games, not controllers unfortunatley. And vice versa with the PS1 controllers.

Yup.

Everything from the old can be played on the new.

Just not vice-versa. You cannot play the new on the old.
