my computer is new but my monitor is at least 8 yrs old. all of a sudden it diminished the sides of the screen 2 1/2 in on each side and darked in color. every now and again when i would turn it back on it would pop back to normal size but it has now consitantly stayed in this half mode for days. i ran a virus check to make sure it was not a virus and it came back clean. i also tried to restore it back to a day when it didn't happen, still didn't help. can i be sure that it is a MONITOR problem? i don't want to buy a new monitor (even though i will eventually) and that not correct the problem.

Here is the deal. Borrow a monitor from a friend or take your monitor to a friend's PC to find out if it is the monitor because the problem could be the Video Feed (on the motherboard or on a Video Card). Video cards also poop out after sometime. Do Not take it to a PC Place because by the troubleshooting steps you have already taken pretty much tells me that you are capable of fixing your own PC. So borrow a monitor or take yours to another PC and if your monitor works fine somewhere else then start looking at the video feed. If the video is independent from the motherboard (a video card that can be removed) then you can get another card on the cheap at Ebay, but if it is coming from the motherboard, then you need to get a new motherboard or a new PC.

Yes it is monitor incompatibility problem only. New computer graphics cards are supporting high resolution graphics display its improves your images smoothing and performance of the display also higher. Due to this your old monitor is not matching through your new computer as well as your Os. Try to put new monitor and see.

My dear sickntyred, it is most likely your monitor. That thing has given you 8 years of good service.. it is time to send it to the antique monitors home and let it rest.
Monitors are so low in price now, that it is shameful to abuse such a true and loyal servant as that monitor has been.
8 years is long enough.. God bless your monitor.

Of course the SIMPLE thing to check (since it's a new comp) is to see if the resolution is maybe a bit much for the old monitor. Even easier is to see if you can adjust your view on the monitor using it's menu.

Computer Monitors do eventually stop working, this is probably the problem with your computer. I would recommend just buying a new one because sooner or later it will just stop working.

This is a sign that you moniter is going to die soon I can't think of any way to fix other than buying a new one. If you shop for a new monitor CRT's (bulky ones) are cheaper.
