I wish I could find an article I read once called "Butt Dr." that had some of the best exercises I've ever tried...
I remember these, I do them three times a week:
Lunges (not the usual ones). You go into a regular lunge position, but rather than step back up into a standing position, you flex your butt and only raise up about 2 or 3 inches. Lift with your weight mostly on the heel of the foot in front of you, almost like you're pushing your weight backwards rather than up. If you're doing it right, you'll feel it a little in the thighs, and alot in just the butt muscle. Do it as many times as you can, starting off with your weakest leg. You can add weights if you want to.
Weighted squats: get some dumbells or weights, and do squats, making sure you use your butt to push up.
Bridge: lay on your back with your knees up, feet on the ground a few inches in front of your butt. Lift your butt up so your weight is on your shoulders and your feet. Concentrate on flexing your butt, and using it to keep your pelvis and torso high up in the air. Hold if for as long as you can, and switch to one leg then the other once you're stronger (one leg up in the air).
Other things you can do: the sitting-and-flexing exercise other people mentioned, and doing stairmaster, rebounding, or jumprope for cardio that'll work your butt hard at the same time.

For toning, rear leg lifts, squats, climbing stairs are some...do an online search for "butt exercises" or "bun exercises" and see what you find. There will likely also be pics and/or a good description of how to do the exercises, so you know your form is correct and you can get the most out of them.

Stair climbing is good for the butt and leg raises, yeah also the exercise bike. But these only build muscle from fat so have some aduki beans from the health food store to break up stubborn fat deposits in tum and bum and find a good diet, eat fruit yakety yak yak u know the rest.

Go to a gymnasium and consult a personal trainer. Nobody
can give you good advice without knowing your age, body
structure, eating and sleeping habits. However do not consider
drug boosted cereals/food that body builders use, much less
any pills or injections of any kind. Make it natural, otherwise it
will all flop from the day you stop and it may ruin your health.

Stand up straight, hold tummy in and hands on hips squeeze buttocks and lift left leg backwards for 10 counts then change legs and repeat with right leg. Don't hold your breath, breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Repeat as often as you like but don't over do it. If you are doing it correctly you should be able to feel it in your buttocks with every lift. Good luck

I was watchin the tv the other day, and on came 'The Lateral Thigh trainer. Its a bit like the stepper u hav at the gym, but i think its much better, cos it moves from side to side, and tones not only ur bum, but the tummy and ur thighs.

When you're just sitting down and watching tv, clench your butt to the music, then you don't even have to get up and it's kind of funny too!
