Already facing a criminal investigation into its management of pipelines in Alaska, oil giant BP reported on Friday that it had found another pipeline break caused by corrosion at one of its facilities on the North Slope. In their announcement, officials at the company said that the break, discovered more than a week earlier on April 6, wasn’t reported to regulatory agencies because the resulting leak was so small. Critics of the company say that argument doesn’t wash, pointing out that a similar rupture in 1998 led to a fire at a production building. BP, which was also responsible for the leak of more than 250,000 gallons of crude on the North Slope earlier this year, has been accused of letting its pipelines corrode rather than spend the money necessary to maintain them.

the pipeline is a low pressure gathering line and is not subject to FERC or DOT mandated inspection rules.
BP the operator of the pipeline had put steel cupons in the pipeline that could be checked to monotor corrosion.

there are acceptable corrosion limits.

the cupons all have checked out ok.

a routine inspection of the pipeline using ultrasonics showed corrosion in the pipe beyond acceptable limits, and further inspections found a pipeline leak that had leaked about 200 gallons of crude oil.

the pipeline was shut down to address the corrosion and the leak.

BP has done the right thing in this case, what would you have them do, continue to pump oil through a leaking line endangering the area just to save you a few cents a gallon?

Oh boy, here we go again....just some more BS and an excuse to raise the gas prices again. There's probably nothing wrong with the pipeline.

Simple supply and demand. There will be less gas available to consumers while the pipeline is being fixed, so the gas that is available will cost more.

With gas prices being what they are, most oil companies are trying to pump as much oil as possible.

of course they are trying to find out how far they can go with us. this is a set up because this time of yr if we get hit with a hurricane you,ll see gas at 5 dollars a gallon. and this is what they been trying to do for the longest time. and now they fiqured out how to get it.
