I was just wondering,
Mimi, Roger, Angel, and Collins, did they all actually have AIDS or were some of them just HIV+ ?

I'm assuming Angel had AIDS since he died. But Roger and Mimi were taking AZT so does that mean they still just had HIV? And Collins never took AZT

I'm pretty sure Angel and Collins had actual AIDS. (In the movie Angel says "people with AIds, people like me." collins: "me too")

Angel and Collins both had full-blown AIDS. Roger had HIV, as did Mimi at the beginning of the musical. At the end of the story, however, she also has full-blown AIDS.

AIDS is the last state of HIV. there's a timeline to the disease, but i'm not exactly sure how it goes. so... basically, one would be HIV positive for years and years (and take AZT). then, according to yahoo! health, 12 or 13 years after the initial infection, HIV turns into full-blown AIDS, and that point the immune system has deteriorated so much that it's impossible to fight, you'd catch a disease like pneumonia and die.

there have been lots of developments in medications since Rent was written, so people can live much longer, better lives with the disease than they could at that point. however, it's still heart-breaking.
