Absolutely.
George W. Bush said it perfectly: "If you're not with us, you're against us"
If you don't agree with what the government is doing or voice your opinion otherwise, you might be a terrorist.
"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervour, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar."

No, I don't consider 'people's' answers, "vicious", perhaps, cynical and saracastic! I feel people are tired of being 'force-fed', what the media and the government 'wants' us to see, instead of just showing the truth, once and a while. I believe, we're just looking for a different reality (or, perhaps, anything that is actually REAL!)
As far as, the 'issue' with the other agencies, Homeland Security, etc...
There are so many agencies, and groups, that we are aware of and many of which we are not, but, that do exist. I believe, anything is possible...If that is the plan. Perhaps, raising gas prices to over $4.00 a gallon, could possibly be a 'plan' to incite, unrest and protest! It would be anyone's guess, what is in store for 'us'? I feel, now, more than ever, we need to be prepared for 'anything'.

I don't think the same thing would happen today, because people are less naive and more informed than they were back in the 50s, and there are more organizations now that would step in and protest. Not to say that there may not be some persecution here and there, but nothing like the McCarthy witchhunts.

i think it has already started disagree with bushes policies or talk out against the Iraq invasion and some people label you as UN American[ it doesn't worry me to be called that as i am not American]people who openly voice anti bush feelings seem to stand a good chance of being put under surveillance the homeland security act being used as an excuse
i believe it will only get worse in the future

Bush is working very hard to create a climate of fear and oppression in the USA... and the religious nuts are buying into it big time
so .. yes it could turn into a McCarthy-ism hunt but for "terrorists" and they would be any one who did not vote for the Bush platform.

I'd like to think they learned their lessons from that era. I don't think the American Public would stand for it...so although we witness some very controversial and aggressive concepts here...I refuse to believe it is a reflection of the general public. Remember, dissenters are often the most vocal. Also, we have a lot of young people here propagating ideas they barely understand. Sometimes, they like to shock and rebel in this format...but it is hardly the voice of America...or of "reason" for that matter. I take comfort from this knowledge...so I hope this helps you, too...because it is alarming when you see it.

I doubt it. The fifties were unique and some of our constitutional and political safeguards were swept away by a political hysteria. In my opinion, this is unlikely to happen. We have aggressive organizations whose mission is to protect our civil liberties and new media that can speak up. I am sure some agency or groups will try to create hysteria but the chances of their succeeding is low.
