I think that the death penalty is advocated most vigorously for by people who don't want a baby aborted for anything. Seems contradictory to me. And the death penalty is in no way a deterrent to crime. That's been shown over and over again. I think hanging is probably a better way to go than electrocution, or lethal injection, actually. And why do prisoners get as many liberties as they do? They don't need Internet, t.v., weights, they should be in plain cells with no beds, hard labor camps all day, and required levels of education. That said, I don't like the death penalty at all. It isn't helping anyone, it gives the wrong message to society, what is the big upside? What if someone convicted of a capital offense, gets executed, and later turns out to be innocent of the crime? Innocent people have been executed. Then all those who convicted him should be executed as well (the judge, jury, prosecutors, police officers and detectives, crime scene investigators, expert witnesses, eye witnesses, and families of the victims) if an innocent person is sentenced to death and later found innocent, then all those other people should die as well. If you can't support the death penalty in this form you are a hypocrite and should support no death penalty at all.
Its sad that Christians would even consider the death penalty as an option, and I wonder if they really know what being Christ-like means?

I'm a city boy who lives in a socialistic country where there is no capital punishment.
If the crime is really "bade" then the convicted criminal should be given the chance to rehbadeiate.
We believe that there are no criminals, just human beings that didn't get a fair chance at life. So, we invest thousands of dollars to educate and rehabilitate them. It totally works. They come out responsible respectful citizens of this country and take pride in whatever it is they do.

I don't see where the death penalty is a deterrent. In states where the death penalty is in place there are hundreds on death row. Besides, I don't think man should take it upon themselves to to kill man. I think the best punishment is not letting them off the hook by killing them, but making pleas and paroles unavailable and giving them life in jail. I guarantee you that they won't give themselves a martyr complex if they "have" to stay the rest of their lives in jail - no exceptions.
My other change would be to ensure not by circumstantial evidence that the person is truly guilty. If an error is made, own up to it and release. Killing someone who killed someone else is not an option - they don't suffer knowing that when they are executed their life ceases.

People in general want to see if you can "fix" those you listed. My cousin murdered a man execution style and got off what I would consider lightly. He and another conspired to kill this man, and did it in a grotesque manner, but neither received the death penalty and both have the possibility of parole. He took the last son from a mother who had already buried two other sons from a car wreck and murder. His mother thinks it's all a conspiracy against her son, and feels he should be released immediately. I think he should spend his entire life in prison and be thankful he's still alive.

I kinda believe in the eye-for-an-eye theory - make the punishment fit the crime. Steal? Hand chopped off. Rape? same - or get castrated. Murder? Let the victim's family have at him.
Problem - our justice system is ridiculously flawed. Lawyers are out to make a buck.
So now what?

I'd reserve death penalty for misuse of authority by officeholders. E.g., I have no quarrel with executing cops who use the badge to extort bribes, nor with executing legislators who take bribes, etc.
I'm very reluctant to allow the State to take the lives of its citizens, though. That arrangement--never mind that it's been around for a very long time--seems to me to lead only to eventual enslavement of the people by government. The history of the arrangement shows 'poor boys' being slaughtered all out of proportion to 'rich boys,' which suggests to me that the fix is in.
On the other hand, I have no quarrel with ordinary citizens whacking ordinary citizens for sufficiently nasty crimes. If someone rapes your sister, and you want to castrate the son of a pig, go ahead, I'll hold your coat. Just be damn sure you got the right son of a pig, or I'll hold someone else's coat while he tracks you down.

Getting off easy is an understatement. Look at child predators, what do they get? A slap on the wrist and then thrown back into society, a society with children running around.

What if you were to find one day that you have murdered many people in a previous lifetime? Will you be able to offer yourself forgiveness and redemption?
God certainly doesn't judgment anyone, who gave you the right to behave as if you were above him? Look within first, and then start judging or condemning anyone else.

Coming from a country girl, I whole heartedly agree! The criminals are treated better than the victims! It's horrible!! Let's take Dennis Rader for example. He killed numerous adults and children and all he gets is life in prison. If it were up to me I would give him to the victim's families! Let them handle him!

i don't think the death penalty is the right way to go - letting the worst of the worst escape their crimes with a quick death is no way to punish them.
i say bring back "hard labor" as a sentence. a lifetime of breaking rocks into gravel should be a fantastic way of punishing the worst crimes.
