Not an easy question.
Here goes:
My "married" parents always "disciplined the kids" by "giving a firm spanking" when we misbehaved or didn't "do chores", and "didn't buy us toys and things just because we wanted them at the moment"
(I figured these days most parents are divorced, their kids get away with everything because the parents are afraid of DCYF coming after them for hitting the kid, and kids aren't made to work at the house, and buy them everything they want to shut them up)
