I am giving a technical presentation on how firewalls affect applications, so would like to be able to setup something basic on an old x86 (Linux-based maybe) in a network lab. Remote administration (browser-based would be best) is necessary.

I don't need a desktop firewall like ZoneAlarm, but rather some software that could be installed on an old x86 and this box would be plugged into a switch or router.

Something with a GUI interface would be preferred, but I only really need the abilty to block IP/ports based on source and destination IP, and possibly NAT.

Thanks!

If you're going Linuxbased, and need it for a short time, you can look into Astaro: the 30 day version is free (www.astaro.com). Otherwise iptables might do the trick for you?

Go to http://sourceforge.net/index.php and do a search.

Everything on the website is open source and most have pretty good documentation or web forums. My personal recommendations are IP Cop and Monowall they will well run on older hardware.

Good Luck

needless to say "Vote Me" isn't seeking to win this one. i assume he has in no way used Open source utility the two. in case you're annoying relating to the firewall utility interfering along with your working gadget, possibly you are able to evaluate applying a hardware firewall extremely. you are able to desire to apply something like between the Linksys fashions. i'm going to caveat this inspite of the undeniable fact that: so as to truly be look after applying a hardware (or utility) firewall, you are able to no longer purely configure it to dodge incoming ports, yet in addition limit what's permitted to go out. you need to additionally substitute the default passwords and community addresses. There are new phishing scams occurring applying those default products of wisdom to reroute DNS addresses to the attackers DNS so as that they are able to thieve your perceive or different information. that is extremely person-friendly experience, yet maximum persons in basic terms prefer to stand up and working, without pondering the protection ramifications of doing so. i'm going to word that i'm a open source proponent and experience that the two Zone Alarm and Comodo are spectacular products and that there are such issues as loose, good utility accessible. If Zone Alarm tousled your gadget, possibly there is something else incorrect with it which could be added investigated. truly, Don
