It means you were looking at the Moon when it was relatively low on the horizon. The Moon looks red/orange on the horizon for the same reason that sunsets are red/orange - our atmosphere scatters the different colors of light differently, and the red part of the spectrum is scattered the least, so its the only color left when we look at the Sun or Moon when it is low on the horizon, when we look at it through the most amount of atmosphere.

if a light cloud passes in front of the moon, it turns orange. this is because the moon actually reflects sunlilght. the cloud in front cuts off some of that light, resulting in an orange tint.
