Not all politicians are like that. Only most of the famous ones.
Politics is about power. So, who gets drawn to positions of power? People who have their own personal agenda, and want the power to implement it.
At the lower levels of government, it's possible to advance an agenda without becoming lost in the process. But as you move up the ranks, more and more time is spent holding your position and less doing the actual job.
As to cheating and lying, the system is set up to reward such behaviors. Those who tell the truth alienate some group of people, and you end up losing the election. So, you lie, because that's what's expected to win. Same with cheating. It's the way the system works.
Which is unfortunate, but it is the current reality. And because those in power have no incentive to change the system (since it works for them), it's a self-perpetuating cycle.

I believe most politicians have great intentions when they want to be elected, once in office I think the ways of DC & other politicians influence the radical changes they must go thru in order to survive in that atmosphere..Like most large businesses there is a "way of conduct" in order to survive the system..Most people have no clue as to how & what it takes to do the jobs in Washington DC,& if they do it will crush their DC ambitions!

I don't think they are liars and self serving cheats to begin with, I think they are people who are love politics, and want to make a change. I think the corruption comes afterwards, when they see the opportunities for it abound. And, I don't think it affects all politicians..... at least I hope not.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. That's my guess. Kind of like doctors, and lawyers. They start out caring idealistically, they get an education, get out into the real world, and them BAM! Got to play the game...you can only change things from the inside out, and to get inside, you gotta play the game. By the time they get done playing, the forget the whole point. Sad...
C'mon, birdsnakecat, what about Halliburton? Enron? You know, the ones where they were TRIED AND CONVICTED? Open your eyes.

Because that is the job and the system is ste to select the best liar. The thief part is just the payment package plan. It provides automatic incentives to promote the liar features.

There are politicians, and there are statesmen. Politicians enter government due to hubris and narcissism. Statesmen enter government due to a desire to "make the world a better place". Please don't confuse the two. There are far too many politicians in Washington, and far too few, if any, statesmen.

It is unfortunate, one only has to look at the current state of national and world affairs to see just how this vicious cycle is playing out, humankind is doomed.

Do you actually know anyone who is a politician? You would change your mind about this if you did.
