this is an open question....

if you received the SS check in hand then sign the back plus the phrase "for deposit only" and include a deposit slip and send it to your bank by mail........or deliver it in person.

If you are asking about automation wherein there is no check, it's merely a transfer of funds from SS to your account, then write a letter to SS and ask them to deposit your check automatically. Send them one of your deposit slips so they can get your routing number. Then on the day you usually get your check, call your bank to see if it has been deposited. If it has not then go in person to your SS office (you can give them a call too) and show them your letter, a copy of an old check, your bank statement and your identification and they will make sure things go right for you, the way you want.

Sometimes when you ask them to change over to automated your next check will arrive late...so plan the way you pay your bills, rent, etc. to accommodate that.

By hand, on paper, sign the back of the check, endorsing, then fill out the deposit slip, setting the amount you want deposited vs cash back, then hand it to the teller.

You can also ask SS to deposit it automatically at the start of each month. They offer that, but I don't use it. If you want to do it that way, there is a flier in the envelope that tells you how.

Call your local SS office. They will either take your info over the phone or set up an appointment for you to come in and fill out the paperwork. Usually takes 30 to 60 days after you fill out the paperwork for it to go through both the SS office and your bank. Believe me, it's much easier.
