there is an actual myth relating to that, for all you annoying feminists who white wash it up.
I don't remember the exact story, but there was a witch who loved a fisherman and when she was in the boat she called up a storm and sank the ship.
witches of old England used to require a tithe of every thirteenth fish from a catch for this reason (i.e. 1/13 of the catch) and fisherman always will throw a bit of fish in the sea "for the cat" i.e. the witch's cat

Can you imagine a woman on Christopher Columbus ship....
Do you know where you are going? You are lost aren't you? You should have made a turn back there? Why don't you ask for directions? I gotta pee, can you pull over? I'm thirsty/hungry? How much longer?
What more bad luck did you need? They just made that story up so they could get some peace and quiet and let them drive (or steer in this case)

Because when there was a woman on board it would cause arguments. The men would be competing for her. so fights would begin and the voyage would be difficult. The bad luck would be of their own making. But one woman on board and months at sea would be a recipe for disaster.

Sexist belief. Plus with sailors if you put one woman on board an all man vessel she would eventually become a play thing on board and the men wouldn't concentrate on their work.

Did you ever see the episode of South Park, were Bebe gets breasts.... I think is was called "Bebe's Boobs Destroy Society"
That pretty much sums up what happens to guys when there's a set of knockers in their midst.
So on a ship where men are actually required to use their brains for running the ship, shutting off their brians and letting their groins do control their actions at all could be life threatening for everyone.

Because they were a boys' club and didn't want women to play. Maybe the woman would distract them from doing their work. Because they were conquering the sea, and the women were suppose to stay at home and wait for them. Just guessing here.
