Mexico is one of the countries in South American continent which speak Spanish language. And so are Mexicans.
Latin American countries refer to all Spanish speaking countries in South American continent.
And all people coming from those contries are refereed to as Latinos--but only in America.
In other countries, people know them separately by the identity of their respective countries like Venezualan, Puerto Recan, Cuban, etc...

Simple, all people from Latin-America (Mexico and below - all the way to the southernmost part of the continent) AND who speak Spanish or Portuguese are Latinos.
The people who live in or are from Mexico are Mexicans, but Mexico is also a part of Latin-America, so Mexicans are Latinos as well.
In the US (NM for example) there is another Spanish speaking group, the so-called Hispanics. These are people who long ago came directly from Spain. They speak Spanish, but are NOT Mexicans and NOT Latinos.

Latino is a more general term that makes reference to person of a Spanish speaking or influenced culture and isn't limited to just Mexico. It can make reference to Central and South America as well. Mexican is more directed to a person from Mexico. Both terms are used a lot and used in place of each other which isn't necessarily correct and can be seen as insulting. I personally don't know which is seen as more insulting but I believe an individual usually prefere to be called by their nationality which may be Cuban, Puerto Rican, Mexican etc.
