Every month a woman releases an egg in anticipation of it being fertilized (getting pregnant). The uterus also gets ready for a possible pregnancy by building up its lining to house a newly fertilized life.

When conception does not occur, then the lining of the uterus, and the egg, are "shed" from the woman's body in her period which lasts 3 to 7 days. The cramping some women have is the uterus contracting to get all the stuff out.
