Several answers refer to "tree huggers" who want to try and protect and preserve the delicate ecological balance between man, plants, and animals so that we all may live together on this planet as Nature (or an evolutionary 'big bang' process, or an intelligent designer, or God) intended.

Another vulgar response is f**k the environment.

So, I have a proposition for all those young punks out there who believe it's okay to squander all of Earth's resources as quickly and as needlessly as possible. Give me ALL your money and I'll guarantee to squander it as quickly and as needlessly as possible, OK?

One of these days most of you young punks will grow up (?) and maybe even mature into responsible adults. You'll have children, and your children will have children. And, someday in the distant future your beautiful baby grandchild will be sitting on your lap and you'll realize that the gas mask (s)he's wearing is necessary in order to breathe clean air. And maybe you'll also know (s)he hasn't got enough fresh drinking water. And when (s)he asks, "Why?" here's how you can answer:

"Well, Honey, I was just too busy to REturn, REuse, and REcycle. It was easier to throw everything in the trash and have someone haul it to a landfill where it was buried. Now that's it's started to leach toxic poisons, that's why you have to wear a gas mask to breathe, and why you don't have enough clean water.

Back in my wasteful generation, we allowed oil companies to drill in the Alaskan tundra even though it disrupted the caribou migratory paths. But we needed cheap gas more than those remote Eskimo tribes needed the caribou for their food, clothing and shelter. Lives of other human beings and animals didn't matter as much as all that OIL.

Because our disposable society didn't bother recycling or re-using cardboard, asphalt, used cooking grease, computers, newsprint, aluminum, oil, wood, water, scrap paper, plastics, glass, cell phones, styrofoam, magazines, phone books and everything else that wasn't quickly biodegradable, there's no more raw materials with which to make any of those things today. So, I'm sorry, Honey, but you'll have to do without. We just used it all up, believing there was no end to Earth's bounty.

Oh, yeah, you can't enjoy a simple tuna casserole or a shrimp cocktail because we let the oil companies drill for oil in the oceans, which disturbed sea life such as whales, coral reef, tuna, dolphin and so many other sea creatures. Sorry, Honey.

Scientists warned us about global warming, but we just laughed it off as a big joke - until the polar ice caps melted decades sooner than they would have naturally. Then horrific flooding, hurricanes and other 'natural' disasters decimated cities on both coasts of both major oceans. I guess we should have paid a bit more attention to the warnings. But Tv comedians joked about it, George Bush and his administration ignored it, and the rest of us just were too damn lazy to try and do anything about it.

You see, the environment wasn't something we cared about. It was more important to drive around in $60,000 SUVs, max out our credit cards, get "low prices - everyday" at WalMart on all kinds of junk we didn't need, and read about Britney Spears' love life. That's everything WE cared about!

So, I'm really sorry that you can't live in the kind of society I lived in, but who knew that we'd someday use up all of this Earth's resources, wasting it frivolously, and without one damn modicum of regard for your future. Sorry, Honey, but that's just the way it is." -RKO-

Proof? I think there is no difference between Reagan, bush, Clinton and W. Clinton signed a lot of executive orders in his last days raising water purity levels and tightening restrictions on what companies can release into the atmosphere but W just returned them to previous levels. This has happened a lot with every president not just republicans.
